American Idol Recap: Top 16 - The Top Eight Ladies

American Idol Top 8 Girls

Ryan introduced the final eight ladies tonight and with a nod to the judges he would be about ready to start the show. It’s the top 16 this week, which means tonight is the top 8 women and the last week before things become co-ed. When he introduced the judges it appeared that everyone was ready to get things moving.

Randy was pimpin’ in a v-neck and a white t-shirt. He said the guys were hot so the girls better bring it. Paula looked like her usual, drunk self in a designer shirt, with a funky weave bun. Paula said she hopes the girls pick the right song. The hair of the 80s was cool. Simon looked like his normal self in a black t-shirt. He said no one is safe.

Like last night for the guys, tonight’s theme was 80s music. Each contestant had to tell about their most embarrassing moment.

Up first was Asia’h Epperson. Her embarrassing story involved her being an extra on a movie. Basically, she had to roller skate, and she hadn’t in a long time. So, she ran into the set light and fell on her butt. They had to break because she messed up the light.

What she sang: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”

What she wore: A pink tank top (silk) and some purple pants - her hair looks cute and she had jewelry on

How she sounded: She isn’t Whitney. She has a nice voice, but the song is too big for her. Still, she wasn’t horrible. She can sing. It’s hard to compare to Whitney, especially when doing the song just like Whitney did. Overall, not as bad as the start to last night.

What the judges said: Randy recorded this song with Whitney. He said it was a tall order, but she showed proof she deserved to be here. It was hot. Paula wondered if she picked a big song, would she be able to pull it off? She nailed it. Simon said it was second rate Whitney. She couldn’t hit the big note at the end. He said she’s good enough for the top 12 though.

Asia’h replied that she would take second rate Whitney.

A break occurred right off the bat since we only have an hour to get through the eight girls. Ryan announced that Kady Malloy and Amanda Overmyer would be up next.

Kady Malloy was up first. Kady’s embarrassing story happened when she was in 9th grade. She sucked at a talent show. She sang “Beautiful” by Christina. Her singing teacher hated it. On the way off stage, she tripped over the sound system, knocked over the mic and the entire sound system collapsed.

What she sang: “Who Wants to Live Forever”

What she wore: A purple sleeveless dress top and jeans

How she sounded: She has some pitchy moments. She doesn’t seem as bad as her past performances. A girl singing Queen isn’t very believable in this case. Her face looks contorted during part of it. I’m assuming this is going to be the worst performance of the night. She reminds me of Luke from the top 8 guys. You can tell both have potential, but both pick crappy songs, on purpose, to ruin their voices.

What the judges said: Randy said it was an interesting choice. It was pretty good. Queen is hard to sing. The big notes were good, but small notes weren’t. Paula said it was, to date, her best performance. Her voice was tender. Thats where the magic is for her voice. Simon says it was better than last week, but she lacks personality. She’s a Stepford wife. Simon says she needs to show emotion, because she is cute & relaxed on tape but stiff when she performs. She might be in trouble.

Amanda Overmyer was up next. Her embarrassing story dealt with fire. They had a fireplace she used to bring out on her deck. She left it out there one night and discovered later she burned down her deck, half her house, and part of her pool.

What she sang: “I Hate Myself for Loving You”

What she wore: Her ugly streaked hair, black sequined tank top, jeans and Aerosmith scarves scare me, but thats nothing new

How she sounded: I hate myself for having to listen to this crap. Typical Amanda sound. It sucked. It sucked. It sucked. It sounds like she has throat cancer when she sings. She sounded the same as all the other songs she has sung in the past. She sounds like she’s singing in a honky tonk bar for the biker boys. Overall, worst performance thus far (and trust me Kady was bad). I don’t know what Simon sees in her. I hope Joan Jett slices her tires.

What the judges said: Randy said this is the Amanda they know and love. He musta been dippin in Paula’s cup. Paula says this is who we fell in love with (lesbian Paula?) and she found her niche. When Paula says “we” she means herself and her other personalities because she isn’t talking about me. Simon thought it was fantastic. He was being honest. She nailed it. This is one of his favorite girl performances. He told her to smile. It was great for him.

There was a commercial break. Ryan said next up was Carly Smithson and Kristy Lee Cook, so I waited through boring commercials with baited breath and such anticipation. Woo!

When we returned, Ryan mentioned we could download the songs on iTunes again, for the 50th time. Carly Smithson was up first. She got her leg stuck in a railing at a bar. Her friend was kinda drunk so she brought butter, soap and oil. A crowd formed to watch her get her leg unstuck and it was really embarrassing.

What she sang: “I Drove all Night”

What she wore: A plain blank tank top and fashion jeans with gold buttons

How she sounded: She sounded good. I’m a Carly fan, but I had been disappointed in her last two performances. The beginning was sketchy, but she picked it up pretty quickly and she sounded awesome. Her voice is beautiful.

What the judges said: Randy loved it. It was very good. Another great performance. Paula called her a dude. She said she’s a dependable dog. She had a great time. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe her singing. Simon said it wasn’t the right song. He yelled at the audience when they booed him. He said it wasn’t a great song, so it didn’t show her off. He told Paula Carly could sing the phone book.

Carly’s mom was here from Ireland for the first time to see her daughter. Ryan said it sounds like the judges believe she deserves to be in the top 12.

Kristy’s embarrassing fact happened when she was seven. She used to pretend she was a dog. She would let her pet rats ride around on her back. She went around for a year barking at people and drank from a dog bowl.

What she sang: “Faithfully”

What she wore: A black and white patterned dress shirt, black fashion belt and jeans - her tongue is red so she must have had red candy or a cough drop - oh and her eyeshadow didn’t match her clothes

How she sounded: She’s ahead of the band. She’s trying to jump the gun. Her music has a slight country accent to it. It was okay. It was better than some of her other performances. She’s no Steve Perry. If it was closer to his performance she would have failed miserably. She just isn’t as good as the other girls. She’s not memorable.

What the judges said: Randy loves this girl. He liked the fact that she put a country spin on it. It could work. Paula said it could be a country music hit. She looks great tonight. She has nothing but positivity. Simon liked the country influence. Simon says she’s forgettable. Simon says at best, she could be 10th.

After a commercial (which made me want to see Canterbury’s Law), the show returned. Next up was Ramiele Malubay. Her embarrassing moment happened in 5th grade. She dropped off her picture at a boy’s house. She went across the street to see if he would look at it. His mom and the boy came out and laughed at it.

What she sang: “Against All Odds”

What she wore: A gray hoodie zip up, a tank top and a skirt

How she sounded: She’s tackling a song too big for her. I like the way she arranged it, but it’s not going to be Phil Collins good. Everybody is doing slow songs. It isn’t her best performance. It’s not standout. Better than some of the others though. She should move on, but won’t be at the top.

What the judges said: Randy said it was a big song and big vocals. It was pretty good, but lacked confidence. He told her to go for it. She has mad vocals so come on wit it. Paula said she had a beautiful face, and pure voice. The textures of her voice are….well she can’t finish because she’s drunk and Simon confused her. She decided to say Ramiele “it’s all about you”. She deserves to be in the top 12. Simon said Paula distracted him. He thought it was old fashioned. He thought it was predictable and he wasn’t jumping out of his chair.

Another commercial and then we have Brooke White. Ryan talked to the judges first and mentioned the download thing again.

Brooke’s embarrassing moment happened when she was 12 or 13. At church, she ran up to her dad, was hanging off of him, and said, “I’m hungry and want to go home.” When the guy turned around, it wasn’t her dad.

What she sang: “Love is a Battlefield”

What she wore: A melon colored top and some black jeans with a belt - she’s wearing a gaudy, red ring

How she sounded: I really like Pat, so I’m not sure how I feel about Brooke slowing it down. I like it, if I ignore Pat sang it. I found it interesting she just sat there. It was probably her best performance of the night, in my opinion. She has good vocals. She’s a solid performer. She’s interesting.

What the judges said: Randy said without the guitar, he liked it. He focused on her voice. He isn’t sure she brought anything new to it. He thought it was interesting. Paula knew the people who choreographed the Pat video. She likes that the song is pure. She wishes that Brooke incorporated the band. Simon thought it worked. The song was original. She made it different. It was great. He didn’t want her to incorporate the band into it. That’s why it worked.

The night came to a close with a final performance from Syesha Mercado. Syesha’s embarrassing moment was when she was in second grade. She wrote the “do you love me” yes/no letter to a boy she liked. She put a strawberry piece of bubble gum in with the note. He took the gum, ate it, then told the teacher on her.

What she sang: “Saving all My Love for You”

What she wore: A black top (sleeveless) and black mini shorts

How she sounded: She sounded good until she hit that first high note. It’s very hard to pull off Whitney. She did it better than most, but still it wasn’t Whitney.

What the judges said: Randy loved it. Paula loved it. Simon said it was predictable, but good. They were short, but sweet.

Who is going Home: Amanda, Kristy Lee or Kady should be going home. All of them deserve to because Amanda sucks overall, Kristy Lee is forgettable and Kady can’t seem to find her voice or personality. None of these performers have the ability to compete against the other girls in the competition.

Who should Stay: Carly, Asia’h, and Brooke need to stay. Of the girls, they were the best of the evening. They have the strongest vocals and the prettiest voices. Syesha and Ramiele should stick around as well. They have solid voices. They just don’t always pick the best songs.

Randy & Paula were happy overall. Simon said Amanda was his favorite performance. Only a few girls were good. They aren’t as good as the boys. He’s disappointed.

Ashtyn is definitely the casual gamer in the family. A game fan since she owned an Atari, Ashtyn can remember when her brother rigged the television so he wouldn’t lose his Super Mario Bros. game. That is, until the power went out! A fan of all things Mario, Ashtyn is a Nintendo loyalist. She digs playing Mario-style RPG games, watching others play violent shooters (because she sucks at them), and playing casual PC games (like Wedding Dash and Cake Mania). As of now, she is into the Wii and Nintendo DS, though she’s certain the games for PS3 and Xbox 360 are more appealing.
