Michael Stipe Coming Out With His CD Release

Michael StipeOne of the things I love about celebrities is how their biggest secrets can become news if they need some marketing minutes. Take REM for example. If you are just a casual listener of the band you might say that you haven’t heard from them in close to a decade if you subtract the Best Of CDs that musicians without new music love to put out. Now that REM has a new CD coming out (April 1, to be exact), Michael Stipe, front runner for REM wants the world to know that he is a homosexual.

This isn’t something new for him mind you. He’s been fooling (or attempting to fool) audiences for years. When talking to Spin Magazine he recalls how hard it was being faux-hetero in the 80s. He told Spin, “I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious.”

I would hope it would be pretty obvious to the men that he was sleeping with. How could Bill not have known? In previous years, Stipe has always attempted to remain ambiguous about his sexuality in interviews. The reason for coming out now was that he realizes how it can help people.

“I’d just never felt strongly enough about a particular relationship to say, ‘Yeah, he’s my boyfriend, that is what it is.’ Now I recognize that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there.”By kid I’m assuming he means 30 year old, because I don’t know too many kids that know him right now.

Ashtyn is definitely the casual gamer in the family. A game fan since she owned an Atari, Ashtyn can remember when her brother rigged the television so he wouldn’t lose his Super Mario Bros. game. That is, until the power went out! A fan of all things Mario, Ashtyn is a Nintendo loyalist. She digs playing Mario-style RPG games, watching others play violent shooters (because she sucks at them), and playing casual PC games (like Wedding Dash and Cake Mania). As of now, she is into the Wii and Nintendo DS, though she’s certain the games for PS3 and Xbox 360 are more appealing.
