This year at E3 it was all about the games. That means there are some very interesting titles set to be released in the upcoming months. Of the ones that were heavily promoted at E3, there were a few that really stood out to me. When it comes to game presentation I was the most disappointed by Nintendo. Their conference was geared towards more casual gamers. While I’m sure I’ll enjoy Animal Crossing, I was looking for something a bit meatier to sink my teeth into when it came to those games that will soon be made available.
Here’s my list of the games I just can’t wait to play.
1. Final Fantasy XIII - Square Enix for PS3 X360: The biggest shock of the entire E3 conference was that Final Fantasy XIII is going to be released for X360. That’s another blow for PS3, which is doing its best to keep up with the more mainstream Wii and X360 systems. While most of the buzz was about the release, it would have been nice to see more information on the actual game.

A young Lycan, Lucian (Michael Sheen), emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has persecuted them for hundreds of years. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, the beautiful vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle to free the Lycans from their brutal enslavement. On stage to take your questions will be Rhona Mitra, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen and director Patrick Tatopoulos. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in theaters everywhere January 23, 2009.
Quarantine
Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles fire station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood-curdling screams and soon learn that a woman living there has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, Internet, television and cell phone access have been cut off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew’s videotape. Quarantine opens in theaters everywhere October 17.

Ashtyn is definitely the casual gamer in the family. A game fan since she owned an Atari, Ashtyn can remember when her brother rigged the television so he wouldn’t lose his Super Mario Bros. game. That is, until the power went out! A fan of all things Mario, Ashtyn is a Nintendo loyalist. She digs playing Mario-style RPG games, watching others play violent shooters (because she sucks at them), and playing casual PC games (like Wedding Dash and Cake Mania). As of now, she is into the Wii and Nintendo DS, though she’s certain the games for PS3 and Xbox 360 are more appealing.

No one is denying that of the three major gaming companies, Nintendo was the biggest letdown at E3. The presentation felt mismanaged, the jokes weren’t funny and the core games that everyone loves were barely spoken about. It’s been the buzz of E3 since Nintendo ended their presentation. Though, Shigeru Miyamoto wants you to understand that this wasn’t a folly of Nintendo as much as it was their main plan of attack.
Apparently, E3 has become so mainstream in its media reach that the folks at Nintendo felt it was more important to capture the casual or new gamer (a huge market in itself), knowing that the hardcore gamer is going to find out about their games in other ways. You might not have heard much about Mario, Zelda, or the other big Nintendo games, but he swears they are in production and will be out for sale soon enough.
In one of his latest interviews with MSNBC he spoke about the E3 conference, explaining Nintendo’s bold strategy:

The following video shows some really cool things about the user-made functions in Littlebigplanet, one of PS3’s upcoming games. If you watch, check out the end, where there is a fight with one of the mini-bosses in the level. This video offers some new footage and portions of worlds that were not previously debuted before E3, so if you’re into the game you will want to check this out.
