This year at E3 it was all about the games. That means there are some very interesting titles set to be released in the upcoming months. Of the ones that were heavily promoted at E3, there were a few that really stood out to me. When it comes to game presentation I was the most disappointed by Nintendo. Their conference was geared towards more casual gamers. While I’m sure I’ll enjoy Animal Crossing, I was looking for something a bit meatier to sink my teeth into when it came to those games that will soon be made available.
Here’s my list of the games I just can’t wait to play.
1. Final Fantasy XIII – Square Enix for PS3 X360: The biggest shock of the entire E3 conference was that Final Fantasy XIII is going to be released for X360. That’s another blow for PS3, which is doing its best to keep up with the more mainstream Wii and X360 systems. While most of the buzz was about the release, it would have been nice to see more information on the actual game.
What is known about Final Fantasy XIII is that it has stunning, fantasy/technologically advanced graphics that give the game an almost ethereal quality. The game is supposed to be about a high-tech, tightly run world, where those who resist against the machine are the enemy. The world in which Final Fantasy XIII exists is the same world as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It’s interesting to note that the stories don’t interlink. It’s just the same world.
There is rumors that Final Fantasy XIII will have online RPG (perhaps even multiplayer) capabilities, though the main focus is still the same as previous versions of the game (single player RPG). The most important emphasis has been put on the battle sequences, which are more realistic, with seamless transitions.
2. Fallout 3 – Bethesda Softworks for PC X360 PS3: It’s games like Fallout 3 that make those who aren’t fans of shooter games fall in love with them. This was my very favorite game release of this season, based on those games I saw heavily promoted. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Fallout 3.
Mark your calendars kids because October 7, 2008 is the day Fallout 3 is set to be released. This action/roleplay game takes you into the year 2277, into the wastelands of the United States after a nuclear attack that devastated the nation nearly 200 years prior to the present day of gameplay. You’ve emerged from an underground vault, which is the only place humans were able to live and remain safe. The game has the option of both first and third person play.
The reason why I like this game so much has to do with both VATS (Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System), which allows for more accurate hits on opponents, but also for the ability to create weapons and ammo out of just about anything. Honestly, what’s cooler than having a lunch box Uzi that blows up stuff with teddy bears?
3. Wii Sports Resort – Nintendo for Nintendo Wii: Just because Wii didn’t give the best performance at E3 doesn’t mean they didn’t mention anything interesting. This was probably the best offering (besides Shaun White Snowboarding – but considering I’m in a wheelchair and can’t stand I’m trying to forget that game exists!). I’m a huge fan of Wii Sports (it’s one of the few games Ashtyn can actually compete against me on the same level of playing – she’s still learning the ropes of the more hardcore games out there), so why not more Wii Sports?
Wii Sports Resort offers plenty of Beach-themed sporting activities. This time, you have to use the Wii Remote to get even more into the action than this game’s predecessor. That’s because this game is set to include WiiMotionPlus, the latest Nintendo Accessory to make games that much more interactive. The games that are said to be included are Disc Dog/Frisbee, Fencing, Jet Skiing and various other unmentioned games. In all, there should be close to ten different events to play on this game disc.
What’s cool about Wii Sports Resort is that it provides more physical activities to keep your family active. Anyone can play Wii Sports Resort regardless of age and physical ability. It’s a great way to keep muscles limber and in motion, especially for those couch potatoes who aren’t getting enough physical activity because they’re too busy playing video games.
4. Fable II – Lionhead Studios for X360: Get married, have kids, and go on quests. That’s the point of the roleplaying game Fable II. This has amazingly clear, fantasy themed graphics. That’s the first thing I found to be attractive in this game. Not only that, but Fable II actually looks interesting. Every time you play the scenery and the story changes. You also have the ability to make your own unique destiny.
This game takes place 500 years after the first Fable game, set in Albion. You have a companion dog, which accompanies you on all your quests. Your dog can do things like bark and help you find hidden items like treasure chests. Of course, you might just find dog treats and toys in the chest, so your doggy companion is a bit self-serving.
You also have the chance to mold your character into whatever you want to be. You can own a house and live your life or be constantly seeking out quests, with no place to call home or rest your feet. That’s really up to you. Your character morphs into a different person based on the decisions you make for the game. Oh, and it should be noted, you finally get to choose to be male or female when playing this game! Fable II is set to be released in October of 2008.
5. Resistance Retribution -Insomniac for PSP – Why don’t I have a PSP? This game looks so awesome! The release of this game was announced at E3. Taking place after Resistance: Fall of Man, the story revolves around former British Marine, James Grayson. This is a third person shooter with the ability for an up to eight player, online multiplayer mode of gameplay. With wicked graphics and some of the biggest video game villains I’ve ever seen, this is going to be one of those must have games.
When Grayson is forced to kill his own brother, in a Chimeran conversion center, for revenge he tries to shut down and destroy all of the conversion centers. Unfortunately, the Chimera have new ways to convert humans. They’ve taken over Europe and Grayson must join a team to take on the Chimera and reclaim the continent in the ultimate battle known as Operation Overstrike.
So, there is explosions, huge aliens, big battles, more explosions, excessive gunfire and did I mention explosions? If you like shooters, this is the game to own.
Honorable Mention goes to Too Human: This just looks awesome. Why wouldn’t anyone want to play this game?
