Nintendo has released its latest installment in the long running Mario Bros series of games. New Super Mario Bros Wii is a blast from the past for fans of the original series. The game was released yesterday and has some cool, new features.

I have been playing Mario games since the original NES. Nothing beats the NES titles. Now, a similar style of game has been released for the Wii. The big difference between New Super Mario Bros Wii is all the pretty bells and whistles the original Super Mario Bros wasn’t able to have…like multiplayer modes, Mario penguin mode, incredibly dynamic worlds and stellar graphics.

Here is the latest press release I received from Nintendo on this title. The game was released on November 15, 2009.

Nintendo Brings Multiplayer Excitement to the Mushroom Kingdom with New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Mario’s Newest Adventure Offers Simultaneous Four-Player Mode, In-Game Guides

EDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– From fans who grew up playing the NES™ console to gamers with a passion for the Wii™ console, generations of Americans have enjoyed the imaginative fun of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros.™ video game series. Now the launch of New Super Mario Bros. Wii heralds the first time in the history of the series that up to four players can compete at the same time, either cooperatively or competitively.

Packed with beloved characters and remarkable new features, New Super Mario Bros. Wii takes the classic side-scrolling adventure of the Super Mario Bros. series and gives it a manic multiplayer boost. Featuring free-form multiplayer action, players can save their companions from danger or literally toss them right into it. While controlling Mario™, Luigi™ or one of two playable Toad™ characters, players can jump in and join a friend’s Story Mode game at the start of any level. The game also features two dedicated multiplayer modes, Coin Battle mode and Free For All mode, that let players easily select their favorite stages and compete across a variety of objectives. Each copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii comes in a red case with a foil-stamped cover.

Among the new features in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is Mario’s ability to transform into Penguin Mario, which allows him to toss snowballs and slide on his belly at breakneck speed. Players also can hop onto a Yoshi™ character and use his tongue to eat enemies, items and fireballs. The game also makes use of the Wii console’s unique motion controls, allowing players to tilt the Wii Remote™ controller to control seesaw platforms or shake it to send Mario skyward in his new Propeller Suit.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii introduces a new feature called Super Guide that offers players optional game-play tips if they are having trouble getting past particular parts of the game. Super Guide lets players watch as a computer-controlled Luigi character makes his way through any stage that the player finds difficult. At any time in the video, the player can take control of Luigi and complete the stage at his or her own pace.

Before purchasing anything from Nintendo this holiday, the company is offering five different game demos through WiiWare. For the following week, anyone who gets on their Wii can download demos for the following games: BIT.TRIP BEAT, FINAL FANTASY® CRYSTAL CHRONICLES®: My Life as a Darklord™, NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits, World of Goo™ and Pokémon™ Rumble. The game downloads are located in the Wii Shop Channel’s WiiWare Section. You can check out the offerings at www.nintendo.com/wii/wiiware/demo.

Pokemon Rumble comes with an extra bonus. Club Nintendo members and those who sign up for Club Nintendo can unlock an exclusive Toy Pokémon character. This character can be used in the game!

To claim the new character: Simply connect your Wii Shop Channel account to your new or existing Club Nintendo account, use Wii Points to download Pokémon Rumble and watch for an e-mail containing a special password that lets you access the character in the game.

More information about this offer can be found at us.wii.com/wiiware/pokemonrumble/register. The offer is available only through April 30, 2010.

Additions to the Wii Shop Channel also include an Indiana Jones title and Capcom’s Street Fighter. Both are available for the virtual console. DSiWare and the Nintendo DSi Shop also features a new Art style game, arcade bowling and a logic game themed with robots.

Here is a description of the new offerings!

You can even save your favorite Pokémon to your Wii Remote™ controller for exchanges with friends.
Nintendo has finally done it. They've found a way to one up Microsoft and Sony, for the time being, by making it possible for Wii users to browse the Internet, for free.

I used to be a fan of Nintendo. I was a Nintendo kid. Then I got an Xbox 360 and all that Nintendo loyalty caused pains of agony on my psyche. I wanted to love Nintendo, but I was getting older and they weren’t producing as many games as I wanted to play. They were having trouble appealing to hard core gamers, but also keeping up with the technology of competitors Microsoft and Sony.

Well, for the first time in a handful of years, Nintendo has taken the upper hand and is one-upping the competition. Not only is Nintendo making the Internet available to users of Nintendo Wii, through the Wii Internet Channel, but it’s being offered for free! I am wondering how the competition is going to attempt to step up and meet the offerings of Nintendo and its gaming audience.

Here is the press release I received from Nintendo, with all the details:

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo is offering an easy way for Wii™ console owners to access the Internet without a computer. Effective immediately, people who want to browse the Internet using their Wii consoles will be able to do so at no added cost.

The Wii Menu houses a variety of informational and entertaining channels, such as the News Channel and Wii Shop Channel, that users can visit to enhance their Wii experience. Wii consoles that are linked to a broadband Internet connection have even greater access to additional content and channels. For example, the Nintendo® Channel is an interactive guide to what’s new in the world of Nintendo that lets consumers watch trailers, mini-documentaries, product demonstrations and game-play videos, while the Check Mii Out™ Channel allows users to show off their Mii™ creations and download Miis that others have created.

The Internet Channel, which can be downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel, allows Wii owners to browse the Internet on their televisions from the comfort of their couches. Users can check their e-mail, make purchases or travel plans, and surf their favorite Web pages by pointing and clicking with the Wii Remote™ controller.

“Wii has truly changed the way people play games, but it is more than just a game console,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Wii owners have access to a wealth of fun entertainment, information and practical tools like the Internet Channel, which is another great way for the whole family to enjoy their consoles with no additional costs involved.”

When Wii launched in November 2006, Nintendo initially offered the Internet Channel as a free download as a promotional incentive to get people online. Starting in July 2007, the Internet Channel could be downloaded in exchange for 500 Wii Points™. Effective immediately, the Internet Channel is again available for zero Wii Points, and it has been updated to support an upgraded version of Adobe® Flash® player.

Starting at the end of October, consumers who have previously exchanged 500 Wii Points to download the Internet Channel will be able to download, at no cost, one NES™ game of their choice valued at 500 Wii Points from Virtual Console™. Details of this download offer will be provided via the Wii Message Board and on Nintendo.com.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

For more information about the Internet Channel, visit www.nintendo.com/wii/channels/internetchannel.

About Nintendo: The worldwide pioneer in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ systems. Since 1983, when it launched the Nintendo Entertainment System™, Nintendo has sold more than 3.1 billion video games and more than 526 million hardware units globally, including the current-generation Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi, as well as the Game Boy™, Game Boy Advance, Super NES™, Nintendo 64™ and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. Ashtyn is definitely the casual gamer in the family. A game fan since she owned an Atari, Ashtyn can remember when her brother rigged the television so he wouldn't lose his Super Mario Bros. game. That is, until the power went out! A fan of all things Mario, Ashtyn is a Nintendo loyalist. She digs playing Mario-style RPG games, watching others play violent shooters (because she sucks at them), and playing casual PC games (like Wedding Dash and Cake Mania). As of now, she is into the Wii and Nintendo DS, though she's certain the games for PS3 and Xbox 360 are more appealing.

If you’re like me, you’re waiting to eat up any and all information about the new Golden Sun release by Nintendo. There was only the announcement that the game was going to be released at the E3 conference. Otherwise, Nintendo was quite mum about the title.

Well, we’ve found out a little bit more information about the game. The game is a lot cleaner, animation wise then the 2-D pixelated characters of the first two releases. That’s to be expected. However, if the action is split across the two screens, as shown in the trailer, I’m not sure how down I am with that.

The big news is that you won’t be playing as Isaac, Sheba, Jenna, Felix, Garet, Mia or any of the other, primary characters from the first two Golden Sun releases. Nintendo has announced you will play as the descendants of these characters. I’m a bit disappointed by this as it would have been nice to see what the old gang is up to. IMO it’s kind of like playing a “Legend of Zelda” game as the descendant of Link.

The good news is that the story takes place in Weyard. The music seems to be along the same vein as that in the first two games. The world design also looks remarkably similar. If the game is good and it resembles the old world, I guess I can look past the descendants thing. Who am I kidding? I’ll be the first to get my copy of this game when it comes out.

For now, that’s all we know about “Golden Sun DS.” Make sure to check back, as we’ll try to keep you up to date on this and all your other favorite game titles.

It’s admirable that Nintendo is trying to appeal to a wide variety of gamers, especially those who do not regularly play games. However, for those who are hardcore, long term Nintendo fans, we want to see those series we’ve been playing since we were kids.

Those of us who played NES and SNES (even gGmeboy) were thrilled by the announcement of not one, not two, but four different titles featuring Mario. There is the “New Super Mario Bros” for Wii, “Super Mario Galaxy 2″ for Wii (it won’t be released until 2010), “Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story” for Nintendo DS and the new Mario and Donkey Kong title that will allow for user created levels. With no Mario last year, this is a vast improvement over Nintendo E3 08.

But…

Nintendo fans want more. We’ve been waiting for Legend of Zelda. We’ve been waiting for Legend of Zelda for Wii, specifically. Instead, we’ve received a brushed over mention of the new Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS. “Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.” It was barely even mentioned though. What’s up with that Nintendo?

I feel let down by the Nintendo conference. I feel like Nintendo has turned its back on its longtime gamers to give more casual gaming experiences. They want more numbers and more money by trying to get those who wouldn’t usually game to buy crappy, substandard titles real gamers do not take seriously.

I’m not sure how long I can hold on without another Zelda title. Sadly, I don’t think Mario is enough to save Nintendo. At least not from the loss of those gamers who have stuck with the company since the days of the NES.

So, longtime Nintendo lovers – what do you think? Are you with me?
